Chester Zoo

Several people have told me that Chester Zoo is probably the best in the country, so I thought I'd head along and check it out on the afternoon of 23rd August 2016.

The zoo boasts over 20,000 animals from 500 different species and is set in 400 acres of parkland to the north east of the city centre. Some of the highlights include the Sumatran Tigers, Black Rhinos, Elephants, Cheetahs, Lions, Sun Bears and Apes. There is also an amazing butterfly house that visitors can walk through and interact with the exhibits.

I was at Chester Zoo for about 4 hours and I guess I covered only half of what was there, granted I was a bit lethargic on what must have been the hottest day of the year. The zoo really is a vast oasis covered by labyrinthine footpaths, so a sense of direction is a definite advantage!

There are regular shuttle bus services from the railway station up to the zoo and I believe it's possible to buy a combined train, bus, zoo ticket that offers better value than the normal walk-up admission prices.

A YouTube video I shot as I walked around the zoo:
